Description
These hybrid hazelnuts have majority native lineages, with some nonnative included to increase the nut size and decrease the shell thickness. Beyond the nuts, the wood is incredibly useful for basketry, wickerwork, fencing, furniture, and more, and because these plants respond so well to coppicing (periodically cutting down to ground), they can become a long term source of material.
They can thrive in almost any kind of soil, and are very drought resistant. Deep shade is tolerated but nut production is much higher in full sun. Will grow to 10′ to 12′, with a diameter of around 6′.
