Description

Found across the continent in boreal and temperate regions, red osier dogwood provides food and nesting habitat to a large number of animals, including 47 different bird species. Deer and moose are drawn to the shoots all year long but especially in winter. The berries are edible for humans but are more palatable to wildlife.

Widely used for stream bank stabilization, their vigorous growth and ease of propagation via cutting makes them ideal for riparian projects.

Prefers moist soil but can handle dry- can also handle very wet areas and even flooding. Tolerant of shade but prefers partial to full sun. Responds well to coppicing and pruning, meaning you can harvest twigs nearly every year for weaving and dye. Usually grows to between 5′ and 12′ tall.
