Description
Some say this cultivar is a variety of the native Vitis labrusca, while others say they’re a hybrid of V. labrusca and the Mediterranean V. vinifera. Either way they thrive in our region, and are widely planted in the Finger Lakes. Before colonization, Onödowa’ga:’ (Seneca people) maintained vineyards along Canandaigua Lake, with some of the grapes trellised up oak trees.
While preferring deep, well-draining soil, these grapes are rather adaptable. They enjoy frequent watering to get established but do fine without much care after that.
